Michelin-starred chef and pro-cycling team nutritionist Alan Murchison has released his latest cookbook, The Cycling Chef: On the Go. Published by Bloomsbury Sport, the hardcover book features a collection of portable, simple-to-prepare recipes designed to help cyclists fuel up, replenish, and restore their energy levels during rides.

Murchison, who has over 25 years of experience working in top restaurants worldwide, aims to provide cyclists with healthier and more flavorful alternatives to processed energy bars, sugary drinks, and takeaways. The book includes a range of savory and sweet on-the-go snacks, such as pressed parmesan and rosemary polenta, date and macadamia “Snickerish” bars, and cherry bakewell balls, all of which are designed to restore strength and be easily accessible during rides.

The book includes photography that illustrates the tasty recipes, like this one for cherry, coconut and white chocolate energy bars.

In addition to on-the-go snacks, The Cycling Chef: On the Go features sections dedicated to pre-ride and post-ride meals that can be prepared quickly. The pre-ride “fill-the-tank” dishes, such as carby corn cakes and “Full English” breakfast frittatas, provide easily digestible energy to kickstart a ride. The post-ride refueling suggestions, including white chocolate miso blondies and chocolatey cardamom protein muffins, offer protein-rich recovery options to help cyclists avoid raiding the fridge impatiently after a hard day on the saddle.

As a respected cyclist himself, Murchison has road-tested his own recipes and cooked them for elite cyclists. The well-thought-out meals and snacks in the book are accompanied by stylish photography, as well as breakout sections featuring advice, information, and anecdotes seasoned with the author’s signature wit and wisdom.

The Cycling Chef: On the Go is Murchison’s third cookbook, following the success of his two previous best-selling recipe books for cyclists, The Cycling Chef: Recipes for Performance and Pleasure and The Cycling Chef: Recipes for Getting Lean and Fuelling the Machine. The new book is available in hardcover and is 246 pages.
