Yellowknife’s Birchwood Coffee Kǫ̀ says it will close for good next month, citing “many factors” that led to the decision.

Writing on its Facebook page, the 49 Street coffee shop said it would close its doors on June 14.

“When we first opened our family-owned coffee shop back in 2016, we strived to bring the community a small part of who we are, creating a space for people to gather and connect,” stated store owners Jawah Scott and her father, Patrick Scott.

“We had no idea how much our community would come to value our little shop. Many factors have led us to this decision, it is one we didn’t make lightly, but we’re looking forward to what the future may bring and focusing on family.”

The news comes after the Scott family separately launched an online fundraiser to help Patrick, who has stage four prostate cancer, travel abroad for specialist treatment.

That fundraiser has raised tens of thousands of dollars and is still going.

“The responses have been like a tsunami of love and support. So many have already generously contributed. I am left feeling incredibly loved and supported and totally humbled by the community of friends and family so willing to give to my journey of hope,” Patrick Scott wrote earlier this week.

He has said he leaves for Berlin later this month to begin what he called “my journey of hope.”

In their update on the Birchwood Facebook page, Patrick and Jawah thanked Yellowknifers for supporting them in the eight years since the café – with a unique menu featuring the likes of salmon bannock – first opened in 2016.

“We wouldn’t have lasted through these tough years with Covid, evacuation, and inflation without all the amazing support of our wonderful community,” they wrote.

“We are so grateful and will forever cherish these memories dearly. We hope to see all your wonderful faces in the last weeks to come!”
